I'm organizing a drive for the the people whose lives were turned upside down by the hurricane. I need clothes, blankets, diapers, toys, etc.

I haven't yet figured out how to get it out to them (other than the red cross and the salvation army), so if you've heard of a program that ships donations out to people out there, please let me know.

I also want to have a side drive for the goth scene in New Orleans - so anything you have that is 'goth' (clothes, music, books, etc) that you can spare would be welcome as well. I'm setting up a paypal account for NolaGoth as well for people who want to donate funds to help that scene directly.

Please email me back directly to let me know what you can donate.

Love the idea, but...

WIth regard to donations, I think all of the relevant charities are asking for cash donations, rather than items for the same reasons you just outlined -- they really don't have the logistics in place to inventory, transport, and distribute an assortment of items. Cash is much better for their needs.

Re: Love the idea, but...

I agree. None of the materials that you would collect would get to the effected areas in a timely manner as most areas are shut off. And those who are displaced in other areas... well, how would you know where to send it to?

What's needed most right now is money to fund rescue, recovery and refugee operations. Also, if you can spend the time it would take to collect, organize, catalog, repack, and ship the materials that you might collect with such a drive then you could just as easily volunteer with your local Red Cross. They need local volunteers right now so that they can free up trained and qualified personnel to send out to the effected areas.

Clothes, food, baby needs and the like are a nice idea, but would be the least effective. Time and money are what's most needed right now.

Re: Love the idea, but...

You're absolutely right. I wasn't thinking. I'm going to keep going with the goth drive, but I'm going to redirect people to donate money instead of doing the other drive.

You're right - I'm going to keep the goth drive going, but I'm directing people to donate cash instead... it makes much more sense.

I think it's a nice idea, Albertine. Most of the major charities are asking for cash donations but I've heard there are a few charities/shelters in that area that are willing to accept what you want to offer. Baring that, you could always collect the donations and hold a garage sale and then donate the proceeds.

I think I'm going to concentrate on the goth drive with the paypal account. I'm going to tell people to give money to the charities instead of doing a drive - it will be a lot easier for charities to buy things there than to have to ship them. Several people mentioned that to me and they made perfect sense.

You dj'ed at C11, right? Do you know any bands you could get in touch with to find out if they would be interested in donating cds?

Nope, though I was there. (I was dating blue-hair Adam at the time).

However, I do have my sources. I'll see what I can do about getting in touch with bands for donations.
